I'm a fine art photographer. Like most, I concentrate on an existential inquiry rather than the explicit subject matter of the images I make.
That inquiry examines the ancient dilemma of human existence: what parts of the world are immutable, what parts are subject to change, and how are we to discern the difference. And those questions lead to others: Is anything really permanent? If change is possible, how? Is it for me to influence?
How much time to invest? What are the dangers of wrongly assumed stasis? Is a failed attempt at influence more dangerous than acceptance of permanence? I have no great insight on any of this (due credit to St. Francis of Assisi). But I'm obsessed with those questions and they frame how I see the world.
Horizons change with or without me, but I try to preserve some of the passing wonder. Geology has a different scale of size and time, yet humans sometimes revel in its stoicism, while others bend the material and accelerate the timeline. Flowers change by growing, going to seed and dying, but we put them a a vase to bring beautiful moments closer to us in ways that give us a chance to pause, yet live ourselves. Geometry appears in the world, but is it organizing us with natural laws or are our minds using it to make sense of our relationships to the world?. People live their life daily among the evidence of that lived life, and find pathways to traverse their world, sometimes through, sometimes around, sometimes underwater, with some measure of harmony or disruption to what surrounds them. My eye is drawn to these scenes as I try to decide what is immutable, and what is changing, and on what scale or time frame. I see angst, peace, drama, and beauty in this inquiry.
I also believe the best manifestation of my work is in a physical print, concentrating more lately on platinum/palladium prints, but I present the e-version of my work here nonetheless.
